    Narrow it down

Answer three questions to get a ranked match, put two hotels side by side, or see how far each one is from where you fly.

    Tool 03

How far is it from home?

Great-circle distance to the hotel. Flight time is a rough estimate at 820 km/h cruise plus 40 minutes, before connections and ground transfers.
    Tool 04

    Jet lag planner

Rule of thumb: the body adjusts about one hour per day flying east and a little faster flying west. Uses today's time zone offsets, including daylight saving.

Enter the quotes you've received. Nothing is pre-filled from the hotels, so the total reflects your real figures.

What makes a hotel worth the journey

      I · Arrival

The approach is part of the stay

A boat up the Oi River in Arashiyama, a lift to the 33rd floor in Otemachi, a ferry across Notre Dame Bay to Fogo Island. The best hotels design the last mile as carefully as the lobby.

When you book, ask how the transfer works. A well-run arrival tells you a lot about the rest of the stay.

      II · Building

      Architecture that answers its site

Fogo Island Inn stands on stilts so the shoreline can run beneath it. Amangiri is cast in concrete the colour of the mesa. A great building frames its setting instead of competing with it.

Look at the floor plan before choosing a room. In landscape hotels, the view is usually the room.

      III · People

      Service with local knowledge

A concierge at Claridge's who knows which Mayfair gallery opens late, a ranger at Singita who reads tracks in the sand at dawn. Staff who know the place deeply turn a beautiful room into a real stay.

Write to the hotel a week before arrival with your interests. Good teams plan around them.

How well do you know the world's great hotels?

Ten questions. Every answer is somewhere in this atlas.

We travel for the place. The right hotel makes the place feel closer, not further away.

        Questions

        Frequently asked

How did you choose these hotels?

Each one is a destination in its own right: a building with a strong relationship to its setting, a distinct food culture, and a long record of consistent service. We aimed for range across continents, city and wilderness, and old and new.

When is the best time to book?

For small properties such as Hoshinoya Kyoto, Fogo Island Inn and Singita Lebombo, book six to twelve months ahead for peak months. City hotels in Paris, London and Vienna often have more flexibility outside major events, trade fairs and the December holidays.

Should I book direct or through an agent?

Booking direct gives you a direct line to the hotel team for requests. A specialist travel advisor can help with multi-stop routes, transfers and charter flights, which matters for places like Kruger or the Maldives. Compare cancellation terms either way.

        Do these hotels include meals?

City hotels are usually room-only or with breakfast. Remote properties often work differently: safari lodges and some island and wilderness inns commonly include meals and activities in the rate. Always confirm exactly what is included before you book.

Are the room counts and dates on this site exact?

They are editorial reference figures and can change after renovations or extensions. Check current details directly with each hotel.

Do I need any health preparation?

For the Kruger area, ask a travel clinic about malaria prevention well before you leave. For the Maldives and the Amalfi Coast, high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen is sensible. Requirements change, so check official health advice for your nationality.

        Safety

        Emergency numbers by destination

Save the numbers for your destination before you fly. In many countries 112 also works from a mobile phone.

Verify numbers with official sources and your hotel on arrival; your embassy's contact details are also worth saving.
        Glossary

        Terms you'll meet when booking

        Ryokan
A traditional Japanese inn, with tatami rooms, futon bedding, a bath ritual and a multi-course kaiseki dinner.
        Kaiseki
A seasonal Japanese tasting menu served in many small courses, each one built around ingredients at their peak.
        Palazzo
An Italian aristocratic residence, often centuries old, many now restored as hotels.
        Private concession
Land leased within or beside a national park for the exclusive use of one operator, which allows off-road driving and fewer vehicles at sightings.
        Full board
A rate that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Common at safari lodges and remote inns.
        Seaplane transfer
The usual way to reach outer Maldives atolls from Malé. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, which affects late international arrivals.
        Shoulder season
The months just before or after peak season, often with good weather, fewer people and better availability.
        Turndown
An evening service where the room is tidied and the bed prepared for the night.
        Monsoon
The seasonal wind shift in the Indian Ocean. In the Maldives it brings a drier northeast season and a wetter southwest season.
