Your first safari: a complete guide

Where to go, when to go, what a day looks like and what to pack for your first time in the bush.
Choosing where to go
For a first safari, South Africa's Kruger area and Tanzania's northern circuit are excellent. Private concessions limit vehicles at sightings and allow off-road driving and night drives, which makes a big difference.
When to go
The dry season, roughly June to October in both regions, brings thinner vegetation and animals gathering at water. The green season is lush and quieter, with newborn animals and migrant birds.
A day on safari
Expect an early wake-up, a three to four hour morning drive, a long brunch and rest, then an afternoon drive into the evening with a sundowner stop. Lodges typically include meals and activities.
What to pack
- Neutral clothing in khaki, olive or tan
- A warm fleece for cold dawn drives
- Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens
- A soft duffel bag for light aircraft
- Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent
Health and safety
Ask a travel clinic about malaria prevention well before you go. On drives, stay seated, keep your voice low and follow your guide's instructions.
