When to book a luxury hotel stay
How far ahead to book, which dates sell out first, and how to stay flexible.
Small hotels book out first
Properties with a few dozen rooms, such as island resorts, safari lodges and boutique inns, can fill six to twelve months ahead for peak dates. Large city hotels usually have more flexibility.
Dates to watch
- Cherry blossom and autumn leaves in Japan
- Christmas, New Year and Easter everywhere
- Fashion weeks and major trade fairs in Paris, Milan and London
- The Cannes Film Festival on the Riviera in May
- The dry season on safari, especially July and August
Seasonal openings
Many coastal and mountain hotels open only part of the year. Check opening dates before planning, especially for the Amalfi Coast, the Riviera and the Alps.
Stay flexible
Compare cancellation terms, not just prices. A slightly higher flexible rate can be worth it for long-haul trips. Shoulder seasons often give the best balance of weather, price and availability.
